LIFE TECMINE in the Practical Guide to Ecological Restoration of the Biodiversity Foundation of the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO)

The LIFE TECMINE project has been highlighted as a case study in the recent study “Ecological Restoration: examples of technical bases and practical solutions”, whose publication is promoted by the Biodiversity Foundation in the framework of the Spanish Business and Biodiversity Initiative (IEEB).

The Biodiversity Foundation is a public entity dependent on the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, which began its activity in 1998. Its objective is to contribute to reversing the loss of biodiversity through different projects and programmes, promoting innovative initiatives for environmental protection and ecological restoration.

The study “Ecological restoration: examples of technical bases and practical solutions” provides tools and recommendations to facilitate ecological restoration and ecosystem recovery. The aim is to provide current and future restoration professionals with tools and recommendations, as well as to guide decision-making on projects aimed at the restoration of a given space and the effective recovery of degraded ecosystems. It is a key reference for the planning and execution of ecological restoration projects in Spain.

The document includes 25 thematic blocks with numerous links to other relevant initiatives and legislation and 50 experts have participated. It encompasses a wealth of information and experiences on recurring issues that arise when designing and developing an ecological restoration project. It is organised by ecosystem groups and cross-cutting issues such as climate change or citizen participation. It is an example of knowledge transfer that contains a portfolio of 90 case studies distributed among the thematic blocks. Precisely, in the Thematic Block 22: GEOMORPHOLOGICAL RESTORATION developed by the Complutense University of Madrid, partner of the LIFE TECMINE project, LIFE TECMINE is included as a practical example, a project promoted by the Forest Management Service of the General Directorate of Natural and Animal Environment.

The inclusion of LIFE TECMINE in this guide is a recognition of the work carried out in the ecological restoration of degraded mining areas. The LIFE TECMINE project has developed innovative techniques for the rehabilitation of ecosystems affected by mining, focusing on nature-based solutions and promoting the recovery of biodiversity.

This publication has important implications as it contributes to the dissemination of good practices and the promotion of ecological restoration as a fundamental tool for the conservation of the environment and the fight against ecosystem degradation.
