The activity was organized by the Mines and Quarries Restoration Network and the General Directorate of Energy and Industrial and Mining Activity of the Region of Murcia, as part of the transfer activities for partners during the year 2024.
The LIFE TECMINE team participated in the visit and travelled to the abandoned mining waste facility called "El Lirio" located in the municipality of Cartagena, in the Sierra Minera de Cartagena and La Unión. The facility started its activity of mineral treatment by differential flotation in the 50's of the last century, ceasing its activity in 1981.
About 20 representatives of different public and private companies, partners of the Mining and Quarry Restoration Network, attended the event. The attendees were able to see the work being carried out on an area of 8 hectares. The environmental restoration carried out aims to collect runoff loaded with heavy metals and prevent them from reaching the Mar Menor.
The LIFE TECMINE project, coordinated and led by the Forest Management Service of the Directorate General for the Natural and Animal Environment and financed by the European Union, has just begun the last year of the AFTER LIFE stage. During this period, a series of informative and training actions aimed at professionals from companies and administrations will be carried out with the objective of transferring knowledge on mine restoration.
The Mines and Quarries Restoration Network arose as a result of the LIFE TECMINE project and brings together professionals and scientists in the field of mining and restoration from all over Spain. Its mission is to contribute to the improvement of mine restoration by integrating the experience of the scientific community, the public administration, mining companies and engineering and consulting firms.
