LIFE TECMINE project on the cover of Montes magazine
The LIFE TECMINE project, promoted by the Forest Development and Management Service, is on the cover of issue 159 of MONTES Magazine, corresponding to the fourth quarter of 2024.
This issue includes an article that delves into the progress and achievements of the LIFE TECMINE project. The aim of the project has been to transform former mining areas located in Mediterranean forest areas using innovative, efficient and highly transferable restoration techniques to achieve ecosystem recovery. A 13-hectare area of the Fortuna mine (Ademuz) has been successfully restored using innovative geomorphological restoration techniques.
The magazine MONTES, a technical-scientific magazine for the popularisation of forestry, includes in the section ‘TECHNIQUE AND DISCLOSURE’ the article entitled: “LIFE TECMINE: innovative techniques for the restoration of mines in the Mediterranean region”. It highlights the innovative solutions implemented by LIFE TECMINE for the sustainable restoration of environments affected by mining, such as the use of pioneering techniques to recover native vegetation and promote biodiversity.
Founded in 1868 by the Association of Forestry Engineers, MONTES Magazine is the third oldest forestry magazine in the world and one of the oldest technical-scientific periodicals in Spain.
The recognition of LIFE TECMINE in a reference publication such as this one, not only reinforces its prestige at national and international level, but also highlights the commitment of the Generalitat Valenciana to the restoration of natural areas. This project, financed by the European Union's LIFE programme, has been consolidated as an example of collaboration as it involves the participation of public and private agents. Specifically, there are five participating entities: the Generalitat Valenciana (GVA) as promoter and coordinator of the project; the Fundación Centro de Estudios Ambientales del Mediterráneo (CEAM); the Faculty of Geological Sciences of the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) and the companies SIBELCO MINERALES CERÁMICOS S.A. and Valenciana de Estrategias y Recursos para la Sostenibilidad Ambiental (VAERSA S.A.).
The LIFE TECMINE project was a finalist in the LIFE 2023 Awards in the Environment category and won the LIFE 2023 Citizen Award.
Last December 2024, LIFE TECMINE participated in the sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) held in Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) under the theme ‘Our Land, Our Future’.
