Back Start of the execution works of the restoration projects of former mining sites in the region of Los Serranos (Valencia) financed with Next Generation funds in the Valencian Community.

Start of the execution works of the restoration projects of former mining sites in the region of Los Serranos (Valencia) financed with Next Generation funds in the Valencian Community.

The actions are part of Component 4 (Ecosystems and Biodiversity), investment line 3 (Restoration of ecosystems and green infrastructure) within the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PRTR). Innovative mining restoration methodologies will be used in hollows from old exploitations located in Public Utility Mountains, with the aim of improving their environmental and landscape condition.

On June 5, the official start of the works of the project “Restoration of former mining sites”, financed by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRTR) and promoted by the Regional Ministry of Environment, Infrastructures and Territory. The actions will be developed in Public Utility Forests, specifically in 14 mining sites located in the municipalities of Alpuente, Andilla, Domeño, La Yesa, Titaguas and Villar del Arzobispo, in the province of Valencia.

The event, held after the formalization of the contract and before the start of the works, took place in the presence of all the agents responsible for the project, guaranteeing the correct coordination of the technical and administrative teams, such as: the Project Management, the awarded companies, the Health and Safety coordinator, a representative of the European Funds management of the Regional Ministry of Environment, Infrastructures and Territory and the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), in charge of the technical monitoring through the GeoFluv methodology. The support of the UCM reinforces that the technical and scientific approach of the project is maintained in the execution, ensuring a precise control of the earthworks and the geomorphological integration of the new landforms.

These projects are replicas of the innovative techniques previously implemented in the European LIFE TECMINE project, coordinated by the Forest Planning and Management Service of the Directorate General for the Natural and Animal Environment, which was consolidated as a benchmark in the restoration of areas degraded by mining activity in the Valencian Community.

The staking out act is an administrative and technical milestone that marks the official start of any public work. It certifies that the parties involved - site management, contractors, safety coordinators and representatives of the administration - have verified on the ground the conditions of the site, the limits of the action, the accesses, and that there are no impediments to the start of the work, which must be completed by June 2026.

The restoration of these former mining sites is not only aimed at environmental recovery, but also at restoring the ecological and landscape functionality of the affected mountains, favoring their public use and contributing to the resilience of the territory in the face of climate change.
