8th TECMINE Partners Coordination Meeting

Every 6 months we meet to evaluate the evolution of the project

Last May 19, the coordination meeting of the LIFE TECMINE project partners took place to discuss and evaluate the status of the actions.

Monitoring Actions

Restoration monitoring is ongoing. It continues with indicators: (1) Topography and hydrology and (2) Ecosystem services.

C1. Topography and hydrology (UCM/UNIZAR)

The penultimate measurement campaign is being carried out. The final campaign will take place in September and will continue in the After-life.

Preliminary conclusions are as follows:

  • Areas without colluvium contribution have higher rills density. The combination of morphology and soil is indispensable for the correct hydrological functioning.

  • Erosion in rills is lower in areas with geofluv, where they are reduced by up to 20%. In these areas, erosion is concentrated in the main channels, being scarce in the rest of the surface.

  • It is concluded that the correct execution of the model and the substrate are the basis for the success of the Geofluv system.

C2. Ecosystem service (CEAM)

Regarding the soil and vegetation indicators, the pre-summer measurement is being carried out and a last campaign will be carried out in July. Some conclusions are:

  • Spreading compost and mixing it correctly favors rapid soil cover, which helps prevent erosion. It is essential to control the dose of compost applied. With the contribution of 20 tons/ha, no salinization has been observed.

  • Regarding sowing, native seeds are recommended in order to achieve the natural succession of the area. The quality control and composition of the seed mixture is essential for the success of the sowing.

  • The bands of shredded pruning debris have proven to be effective for the accumulation of humidity. It is advisable to increase their width and density in steeper areas.

Other actions:

- The VAERSA team is preparing 2 documents on restoration recommendations and support for field supervision.

- The first replica of the project is being carried out at the "San Luis" mine in Arguisuelas (Cuenca) by the company SAMCA. The remodeling works are being finalized and a team visit is being organized for June 10. Next actions In the coming months we will continue monitoring and disseminating the results obtained by all means.

The next events where we will present the project are:

- Iberoamerican online Congress (June 2021).

- SER online Congress Alicante 2021  (September 2021)

- IUCN Congress, Marseille (September 2021)
