International Forest Day. 21 March

21 March is the International Forest Day, which aims to raise awareness of the importance of forests, the functions they perform, the causes that threaten their disappearance and the ecological, economic and social benefits that they provide to us.

The theme for 2021 is: "Forest restoration: a path to recovery and well-being".

In addition, the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, which starts this year, is to prevent, halt and reverse ecosystem degradation worldwide

The LIFE TECMINE project contributes to this important challenge through the restoration of 13.4 hectares in a mining area. Using innovative techniques, we have reclaimed a degraded area and put in place a new natural ecosystem that offers multiple benefits.

The new landscape of the Fortuna mine protects the soil against erosion, captures carbon from the atmosphere, is the new home to a wide diversity of wildlife species and is a new place of recreation for local people and visitors.

We want to celebrate with you the important role of forests and the contribution of the LIFE TECMINE project to forest recovery and conservation.

Forest Restoration: A Path to Recovery and Well-being

The LIFE TECMINE project contributes to this goal by restoring 13 hectares in a mining area.

We created a new natural ecosystem that provides environmental and social benefits.

The new landform channels and regulates rainwater, protecting the soil against erosion.

The soil and new plants capture and store carbon from the atmosphere, contributing to mitigate climate change.

We planted nearly 9,000 plants that will be forests in the future.

60 species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians find shelter, food and water here.

The new landscape of the Fortuna mine is integrated into the environment and provides new recreational uses in a sustainable way.
